Farida*, a 16-year-old girl, lives in a rural village in Egypt with her mother and older sister, Dina*.

Growing up, Farida felt a deep lack of affection at home. Her father was frequently abroad working to support the family, while her mother—unemployed—believed that she had to be harsh to raise and protect her daughters. This strict and emotionally distant upbringing left Farida feeling isolated and unloved. She began to believe that no one cared about her, not even God.

In her loneliness, Farida formed a new friendship with a Muslim boy named Amir*, whom she met through school friends. Amir’s attention and kindness filled the emotional void in Farida’s life, and she entered into a relationship with him. Their daily conversations strengthened their connection, making Farida feel seen and valued.

An emotional trap

But over time, Amir began pressuring Farida to convert to Islam, marry him, and run away from her family. What Farida didn’t know was that Amir belonged to a radical group that targets Christian girls for conversion through emotional manipulation. Unaware of the danger, Farida began to feel trapped, torn between fear and hopelessness.

Dina, her older sister, noticed a change in Farida’s behaviour and her secretive phone calls. Concerned, she sought help from a local church leader. The leader reached out and invited Farida to a weekly girls’ meeting at church. Though initially hesitant, Farida was deeply moved by the leader’s warm embrace, a gesture of care she had never experienced before.

That day marked a turning point. Farida opened up about her family struggles, insecurities, and her emotional dependence on Amir. The leader patiently walked alongside her, helping her uncover her true worth, beyond appearance or attention. She explained how extremist groups exploit emotional vulnerability to manipulate girls into abandoning their faith.

Recognizing the danger Farida was in, the leader intervened and helped her end the relationship, even though Amir resisted letting her go. With the ministry’s continued support, Farida began attending the girls’ meetings regularly. She slowly embraced a journey of healing and self-discovery within a loving, faith-filled community.

Today, Farida has ended the relationship and is being supported regularly by the ministry leader, who is helping ensure her emotional and spiritual growth.
