Renewed Impetus for the New Year

Show: false / size: 0 / Country: Worldwide / isvisible: true
The dawning of a new year always brings to people an inexplicable impetus to start anew. We thank God for giving us wisdom to return to Him to start anew, for “every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father..." (James 1:17).
The findings from Open Doors’ 2024 World Watch List report can be difficult to comprehend. The idea that 1 in 7 Christians worldwide—more than 365 million total—are suffering persecution and discrimination for their faith is shocking. Knowing that there were nearly 5,000 martyrs last year is so painful. And hearing about the 14,000 churches and Christian-owned properties that were attacked or forced to close last year is a reminder of the world’s brokenness.

But as Christians, we must not give into despair. In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, the Apostle Paul writes: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” In verse 16, he goes on to write: Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”

Instead, our God calls us to take action!
Thankfully, He has given us a way to stand with persecuted Christians around the world: prayer. Think about the powerful truth of James 5:16: “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

When we stand with our suffering family, we help them see that while they may be persecuted, they are not abandoned!

You can pray for persecuted Christians living in the 50 countries on the 2024 World Watch List. Pray through one each day, or take a week to pray for one country repeatedly. Share these requests with your friends, family, small group or church community.

But however you do it—just pray! It’s the best thing we can do for God’s people who risk so much to follow Him.

please pray
Our Father, hallowed be Your name. Thank You that You are holy and good. Help me lift my eyes to You in every situation in praise and prayer. Strengthen persecuted believers around the world to ‘sing and make music’ to You in the midst of their trials. Amen.
