Trusting the unchanging God – A story of an Iranian Christian leader

For more than 47 years under the Islamic Republic, many Iranian Christians have learned that their ultimate hope for freedom rests not in changing political circumstances but in God's unchanging faithfulness. Governments have risen and fallen, sanctions have been imposed and lifted, negotiations have begun and collapsed, and ceasefires have come and gone. 

Yet, the church has endured through perseverance, prayer, and the sustaining power of the Holy Spirit.
  

The Lord’s given courage surpasses fear

Zohal*, an Iranian Christian, was detained by Iran's intelligence service while leading a discipleship course in northern Iran. Yet, her confidence is sustained by God’s faithfulness.

"I was studying the Bible a few days ago, and one passage stood out to me," Zohal recalls. "It was about Mary, the mother of Jesus, when she became pregnant. I thought about how frightening that time must have been for her as she faced accusations of immorality and dishonesty. Yet it was God's promise and His strength that sustained her through such a difficult season."

  Reflecting on her own calling, she added, "When we respond to the Lord's invitation, and enter His ministry, we must be prepared for hardship and persecution."
 
She vividly remembers the moment the authorities arrived. "When intelligence officers forced their way into the building, the first thing I did was destroy my mobile phone. They immediately began interrogating me, from early morning to afternoon."
 
Despite her fear, she experienced God's presence in a profound way. 

"In the midst of my fear, the Lord spoke to me through the Gospel of John (8:32): 'You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free'. After that, the Lord gave me strength, and I answered their questions with a courage I knew could only come from Him."
 
The following day, she was ordered to report to an intelligence office, where the pressure intensified. 

"They tried to intimidate me by threatening my family and warning that they could confiscate my property. But by God's grace, I told them, 'I have done nothing wrong except preach the Word of God, speak about His healing power, and encourage people to forgive others.'"
 

God’s presence surpasses threats

Looking back on her ordeal, Zohal sees God's hand at work throughout every stage of the experience.

  "Although those days were frightening, I now see how faithfully God was with me," she said. "He gave me peace when I was afraid, wisdom when I was questioned, and courage when I felt weak. My experience reminded me that even in persecution, the Lord never abandons His people. He remains faithful, and His presence is greater than any threat we face."

For Iranian Christians like Zohal, persecution has reinforced a truth they have learned over decades: political circumstances may change, but God's faithfulness remains constant. Their hope is ultimately anchored not in shifting governments or international diplomacy, but in the One who has sustained His church through every season of trial.
 

God’s unchanging faithfulness surpasses changing circumstances

Psalm 20:7 reminds believers, "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God." For many Iranian Christians, this verse speaks directly to their present reality. Their confidence is not ultimately in diplomatic agreements or political leaders but in God Himself. Governments naturally pursue their own national interests, and international negotiations are typically driven by security, economic, and strategic priorities rather than concern for persecuted believers. 

Rev. Dr. Edward Hovsepian, the late pastor, mentor, and spiritual leader who shepherded pastors and leaders across diverse house churches and church networks, playing a crucial role in shaping one of Iran's largest evangelical movements, believed that this conviction had been forged through decades of hardship and persecution.

  "Many Iranian house church leaders are learning to rely on the Lord rather than on politicians," he said. "World leaders inevitably pursue the interests of their own nations, whereas the concerns of Iranian Christians often receive little attention in international negotiations. This perspective reflects a conviction shaped by decades of persecution: while political circumstances may change, God's faithfulness does not."
