For many believers around the world, following Christ comes at a great cost. For a Hmong couple from Vietnam, the decision to embrace Jesus meant the loss of relationships, livelihood, and even the field that had sustained them. Yet amid hardship, God’s faithfulness shines brighter than their suffering. It brings restoration, renewed hope, and a fresh start through the care of Open Doors’ local partners.
Trial and Loss in Hardship
Sung A Pao* is a farmer – the family’s only means of livelihood. Like other villagers, his extended family traditionally practices animism and ancestor worship. Therefore, when Sung and his wife, Chang Thi Sua* chose to follow Christ, opposition came swiftly. Their family rejected them and pressured them to return to their former beliefs. Their father took back their land after they refused to renounce their faith countless times.
Despite this loss, one thing grew even stronger: their faith in Jesus Christ.
“My wife and I decided to follow Christ, so we left behind the belongings that my father wanted to take back. We are happy that God has kept our faith strong through this challenge,” Sung shares.

Restoration and Provision in Grace
As the family struggled to survive, Pastor Huy*, a local OD partner, came alongside them with practical help and encouragement.
Pastor Huy said, “Through your intercession and support, the family received the resources needed to begin planting and farming again. They were also provided with basic supplies necessary to rebuild their livelihood. I could see how God was restoring them through this challenge.”
For the couple, this support felt like a lifeline. OD’s relief became a tangible reminder that they were not alone, and that the global body of Christ stands together.
“We believe that if we remain faithful, the Lord will fight for us.”

“We believe that if we remain faithful, the Lord will fight for us,” said Sung A Pao and Chang Thi Sua.
Sung expressed his gratitude to the Lord and those who supported them after receiving the help. “First, I want to thank God for answering our prayers. Secondly, thank you for supporting us during this difficult time. We now have food to eat, and my children have clothes and blankets to keep them warm. Thirdly, I want to thank Pastor Huy for praying for us and encouraging us to continue following Jesus Christ.”
Chang added, “We know that you pray for us and help us in our spiritual journey. Your practical support has been a meaningful gift for my family. May God bless you abundantly, especially for you heart toward persecuted believers like us.”

Recently, Sung shared an update about their family situation and requested prayer, “We are still staying in our home until we move to a new place as planned and return my father’s belongings as he requested. Please pray for me and my family, that our lives may shine God’s love and that we may serve Him whenever there are opportunities to expand His Kingdom on earth.”
We continue to lift up families around the world who face hardship for their faith in Christ. May this testimony inspire us to keep standing with the persecuted church and continue believing in a God who restores what has been lost.
